Your Brain Health and Aging

Have you ever forgotten a name or a fact and attributed it to age?  Of course you have if you are human.  Dr. Peter Graf, a professor of psychology at UBC, studies the relationship between memory and aging and will be presenting his findings on October 8 at the South Okanagan Seniors Wellness Society’s first-ever conference on brain health and aging.  The conference is attached to the 17th annual Seniors Symposium trade show, which promised to attract record numbers this year.

Brain health and aging is of paramount interest in our communities.  We have the oldest population in British Columbia.   Currently 26% of people in the South Okanagan Region are seniors aged 65 and older.  The British Columbia average is 14.6% over 65.  Life expectancy in BC is the highest in the country – 70 years for men and 83 years for women.  By 2031, the seniors population in the South Okanagan Region is expected to grow to 32,000 people.

“We are honoured to have such highly qualified presenters at our very first Seniors Symposium conference,” stated Sandra Dean, Executive Director of the South Okanagan Seniors Wellness Society.  Dr. Robert J. Sutherland, Chair of Neuroscience at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience at the University of Lethbridge will be lending his expertise in brain plasticity and memory to the event.  Twilla Welch, a psychogeriatric educator on the South Okanagan Seniors’ Mental Health Team, is going to speak on how to beat the seniors’ blues.   As well, Laurie Myres from the Alzheimers Society will present the latest research on potential causes and risk reduction for Alzheimers.

The conference will run form 8:30 to 4:30 in Salon C of the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre.  Okanagan College is partnering with the Seniors Wellness Society to host the conference and is taking registrations through the internet at www.okanagan.bc.ca/csreg or by calling 250-492-4305.  The cost of the conference is $49+GST and includes refreshments and lunch.

The Seniors Symposium will also feature its traditional tradeshow with close to 100 booths exhibiting the best products and services for adults over 55.  The Seniors Symposium is in its 17th year and is the largest seniors’ tradeshow in Canada, with over 5000 visitors annually.

OK In Health wil have a booth #72, so drop by and say "hello"

“The goal of the 2008 Seniors Symposium is to inspire and motivate people to live a healthier life, whatever that may mean to them,” states event coordinator Tracy St. Claire. “This year we are adding an activity area that will allow participants to sit in for short demonstrations classes in a number of fitness areas.”  Classes will run throughout the day and there is no cost for the classes.

Repeat visitors will find many of their favorites at the Seniors Symposium:  entertainment on the Coldstream Meadows stage; quilting, model boats and bonsai displays.  There are two grand prizes this year.  Wells Gray Tours is providing a $500 travel voucher and $500 spending cash and Sun Fun Tours is sponsoring a $500 travel voucher to the lucky winner drawn from Seniors Symposium attendees.

Attendance at the Seniors Symposium tradeshow is by a $2 donation to the Healthy Aging Fun.

Limited booths are still available for the tradeshow and can be reserved by contacting Tracy St. Claire at tds@uniserve.com or 250-492-2268
