Ecstatic Movement as Healer

by Dawn Dancing Otter

Ecstatic dance has been the way we have expressed ourselves in Spirit since the beginning of mankind. We dance in ceremony, in ritual, in prayer, in art, to release stress, and for pleasure and joy. Dance becomes ecstatic when we are no longer trying to direct our bodies from the thinking mind. Just like meditation, when the movement is expressing itself from pleasure and joy, we raise our vibrational level to that of pure love, and we are above our thinking minds, just BE-ing.

Ecstatic dance is a prayer with your body, with the intention of experiencing the present moment. As we are beginning to discover in many other modalities of healing, that experiencing the Present, the NOW is the pathway to clearing our 'insane' thoughts that keep our minds busy, cluttered, and confused. This is a global condition, and stress has become a self-perpetuating illness. If we can give ourselves the opportunity to discharge that stressful energy, we heal spontaneously.

Anyone can experience the joy of moving freely, no matter what physical limitations one has. Even if we can merely breathe, that itself is a dance, unifying expansion and release. We all have movement limitations, some are more subtle than others. Some of us seem very flexible, but may have limited integral strength. Others are strong and stable, but may have limited range. Most of us are somewhere in between. All of these challenges can be experienced as an expansion of our awareness about ourselves. Movement is very honest, there is no real reasoning with it. Accepting our limitations, and experiencing freedom within those limitations, is the first action to transforming our limitations into life lessons of self-acceptance.

Indigenous cultures, the world over continue to engage in Ecstatic dance as part of their cultural vernacular. One does not have to have the experience of living in an indigenous culture to enjoy Ecstatic Dance. There are many non-culture specific styles of Ecstatic dance for every'Body' to joyfully explore . Examples are DanceAlchemy Ecstatic Dance(my body of work), 5-Rhythms, Continuum, Core Connexion, Kundalini Trance Dance, Yoga Trance Dance, and Kripalu DanceKinetics.

As a Shamanic Practitioner, and longtime 'Movement Alchemist' I have lived and continue to expand my journey through the gifts of dance, movement, Shamanic Sacred Medicine, and deep self-inquiry. It is a continuum of joy that I am grateful to share.
