What is Reflexology?

Written by Diane Wiebe, Certified Reflexologist, RAC member.

It seems that people are very interested in natural therapies. One of the more common and popular therapies is reflexology. Although this therapy is easy to learn it is remarkable how effective it can be. Reflexology is based on the belief that there are reflex areas in the feet, hands and ears and every part of the body corresponds to one of these areas. Application of pressure to the reflexes relieves tension, improves circulation and promotes the normal function of the body.

Although reflexologists may access sensitive reflexes in the feet, hands and ears, reflexology is not intended to be painful. These sensitive reflexes often reflect tension in the related area of the body. Reflexology has an accumulative effect and as successive reflexology sessions are had, the sensitivities dissipate.

Reflexology is a practical therapy to know as it can be done anywhere and anytime. It can be done on yourself as well: while waiting in line, at meetings, even while watching TV or as a passenger in a car. Reflexology is a wonderful gift if someone is not feeling well.

As well as being a very relaxing experience for both the mind and body, reflexology is recognized as an established, respected and effective therapy.

World Reflexology Week is the third week in September.
