Now you can improve the fat burning process 24 hours a day by Norm Danniels. Canadian Nutritionist
Whether you are trying to lose a few stubborn pounds or completely reshape your body, you need to make sensible dietary changes and engage in some regular exercise. A magic pill to do all the work would be great, but it just doesn’t work that way. Having said that, an effective fat burning supplement can be a wonderful catalyst to help you achieve your weight loss goals and accelerate the whole fat burning process. It needs to be strategic and target the specific fat burning opportunities that occur over the course of the day. Men and women are metabolically and hormonally very different. Women, for example... Overweight Pets - Its not just a human problem! by Linda Buhler, Pet Practitioner, South Okanagan.
Just like us, pets that are overweight are at a much higher risk of developing a number of health conditions. Problems like arthritis, heart disease, respiratory difficulties, and diabetes are among the long list of issues seen in cats and dogs who weigh more than they should. Unfortunately, unlike humans, obesity in pets is often not taken very seriously. The best way to maintain a healthy weight for your pet is to feed them an appropriate diet that is adjusted to ... How to Buy and Store Vegetables by Maria Carr
Your mother's voice echoes in your head every time you head to the supermarket. You know you should eat more leafy greens, rainbow colored vegetables, and fibre-rich fruit, but it seems like every time you shell out the cash for the fresh stuff, you end up throwing much of it away. You go shopping on Saturday, and by Monday, the lettuce is wilted, the tomatoes are mealy and squishy, and the avocados, well, their buttery flesh is streaked with black. Food is expensive, and you can't afford to waste it. If you feel like you throw away a lot of food, you're probably right--and you're not alone. We throw away nearly 31.6 million tons of food a year. That's like throwing away $600! To help cut down on food waste, you need how to store it, how long it should last, and what to eat first. We've compiled a guide to produce that will have you eating (not wasting) your precious produce... [ Read More...]

Shamanic Journeying & Sacred Medicine: Alchemy of the Soul by Dawn Dancing Otter, Penticton, BC
The first healing that we are historically aware of is Shamanism. Though it has gone by many different names, nearly every culture, the world over, has a version of Shamanic practice. Even considering its longevity and foundational presence in human life, this practice has remained relatively enigmatic until very recently. Shamanic Sacred Medicine is all about returning to ourselves and healing our illusions of separateness. As we heal our fragmented consciousness, we expand compassion and... [ Read More...]

What is Cranio-Sacral Reflexology
by Maria Carr
Cranio sacral is the name given to the approach to osteopathy developed by Dr Sutherland 100 years ago. He saw how the bone structure of the skull permitted slight motion and noted that restriction of normal motion due to injury, trauma or disease could affect health. The Reflexologist can use cranio-sacral therapy with conventional reflexology, since the bones of the feet reflect the skull and sacrum exactly. By using the gentle techniques of Cranio-Sacral Reflexology, the practitioner is able to release the strain patterns found and support the body in its attempt to return to an ideal state of balance and function for healing to progress. If You Haven't Had Your Shake, You Haven't Finished your Workout!
By Norm Danniels
What you consume immediately following your workout is almost as important as the workout itself. Every time you exercise, you deplete a significant amount of your stored muscle glycogen (carbohydrates) as well as your amino acid pool, and the stress of that exercise breaks down and damages your muscle cells. The good news is that those muscle cells grow bigger and stronger (provided they are properly nourished)... The Importance of Eating your Berries by Norm Danniels
Norm Danniels has been involved in the formulation and development of natural health supplements for over two decades. His focus is on the unique nutritional needs of people with active lifestyles.
It’s no secret that fruit, especially berries, contain many of nature’s most potent antioxidants and phytochemicals.  Unfortunately, few people consume enough to adequately battle the environmental toxins, stress and excessive free radical exposure we face each day.  Free radicals are reactive compounds that damage surrounding cells and, when left unchecked, contribute to the erosion of good health. The ability of berries to support our body in neutralizing free radicals makes a concentrated berry supplement one of our most effective defenses. [ Read More ...]

Water, Water, Everywhere
It is an irritating fact that we lose our thirst as we get older – difficult when we are trying to do all the things that improve our health. Most people are aware of the recommended 8 glasses of water a day (about 2 litres), but many find this a struggle to achieve; thirst really helps here! We can tend to confuse hunger with thirst and so should really make a habit to drink even if we don’t think we are thirsty – this can really help to curb an excessive hunger that can lead to weight gain. The human body is approximately 65% water, and... [ Read More...]

OK's 150 Organic and Natural Gardening Tips
# 1 - Do not over fertilize garlic or it will become leafy. Use a high phosphorus fertilizer (the middle number) to promote bulb formation.
# 5 - New beds need soil amendments and double digging for that extra starting kick.
# 6. Soak finished compost in water to “brew” compost “tea,” a nutrient-rich liquid that can be used for foliar feeding or for watering plants in your garden, backyard, or houseplants.
# 13 - When planting in clay soil, cover seeds with vermiculite instead of clay. Clay absorbs heat and may bake the seeds and stop germination. Clay also forms a top crust, forming a barrier for the young seedlings.
# 148 - Mix small seeds you are going to broadcast seed with sand before spreading. This makes for more even seeding. After sowing, spread with a light cover of mulch or soil.

With the arrival of summer comes a general feeling of wellness and a sense of health and vitality. As a result, many of us feel we can stop using key nutritional supplements that have the potential to benefit us year round. One such product is whey protein. It also offers tremendous therapeutic benefits including anticancer activity, osteoporotic benefits, immune modulating effects, antimicrobial and prebiotic properties, antioxidant activity, cardiovascular protection, and intestinal support. Most of us are more active in the summer than any other time of the year. Outdoor activities like cycling, roller-blading, and walking are all great forms of exercise that allow us to take advantage of the summertime climate. Okanagan Mosquito Control Program - Spraying to start by Marcie Crozier
There are some points to ponder regarding the government of B.C.’s Mosquito Control Program. In the notice which appeared in the May 14, 2008 Vernon Morning Star, we see that BWP Consulting Inc. Honey Bees will Mosquitobe spraying B.T. throughout the North OKanagan, at times by helicopter. The B.C. government has also approved the application of the adulticides Methoprene, Malathion and Synergized pyrethrins or synthetic pyrethroids. Adulticides (targeted to kill adult mosquitos) are nasty chemicals. As most people have heard by now, there has been a concerning reduction in the number of honey bees, and if these products are contributing in any way to this reduction. To date, British Columbia has not had any confirmed cases of West Nile Virus (WNv). I wonder why we are dumping these pesticides into our environment when we don’t yet have any cases of WNv and so many with breathing difficulties, allergies, and asthma. [ Read More]

Glutamine… The Healing Protein by Elaine Munro, an active business woman and training athlete, who conducts seminars focussing on active lifestyle & healing nutrition, as well as raising consumer awareness about the natural health industry.
Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body, but in stressed, healing or active individuals, the demand outweighs the supply. What is truly amazing is the variety of functions that depend upon or are improved with abundant supplies of glutamine. Glutamine supports the natural synthesis of our key anti-oxidant and immune-boosting chemical, “glutathione”, which provides overall disease-fighting insurance. It also helps prevents pathogens from entering the system, primarily through the intestinal wall. Are You Taking Protein For Granted? by Elaine Munro, an active businesswoman and training athlete, who conducts seminars focusing on active lifestyle & healing nutrition, as well as raising consumer awareness about the natural health industry. The word ‘protein’ comes from the Greek root, ‘proteios’, meaning ‘fundamental’ or ‘primary importance’. From the context of human health, it should be a fundamental part of any health improving strategy. Proteins range from muscle tissue to skin, bones, and hair. These are the more obvious ‘structural proteins’. There is also a huge range of ‘subtle proteins’ that are generally overlooked such as blood hemoglobin, brain fluids, your super immune booster known as glutathione and even the structure of your DNA, to name just four. In all, there are more than 500,000 types of protein in the human body. phytoberry & Vegegreens

It takes more than an apple a day by Norm Danniels. Norm is considered one of Canada's leading sport nutrition specialists.
Norm DannielsGreen food supplements are continuing to gain in popularity, offering a wonderful bridge between food and supplements. Made up primarily of whole food concentrates and extracts, they are nutritionally denser than the foods we consume, and contain a wide variety of vegetables that would otherwise never make it to our table. Vegetables don’t play much of a role in today’s fast food world, but they are nutritional powerhouses that must be included in our diet. This is where green food supplements make their greatest contribution. They are highly alkaline, contain significant levels of phytochemicals and trace nutrients and make a tremendous contribution to our nutrient intake. [Read full article]

Fruit and berry concentrates by Norm Danniels. With over 20 years of experience in the Health & Fitness industry, Norm is considered one of Canada's leading sport nutrition specialists.
Natural AntioxidantsAs significant a role as green foods play in our diet, there is a whole other side of the plant kingdom that offers similar nutritional density. Fruits and berries are loaded with phytonutrients, polyphenols and natural antioxidants. In fact, berries have the highest ORAC value (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), so their importance can’t be overstated. Despite their more pleasant taste, fruits and berries are neglected nearly as badly as vegetables. An apple a day might sound like a good dietary strategy but it falls well short of what we actually need, especially when you consider that over the last 100 years the mineral content in our commercial farmlands has fallen by over 80%. If the minerals are lacking in the soil, they will also be lacking in our food. [Read full article]

Feng Shui :To Live in Balance by Teresa Hwang - Vernon
Teresa HwangTraditional Chinese Feng Shui is based on the study of balance and harmony, in both an internal and external sense. From the time when Feng Shui first came into existence in China 5000 years ago, the study of geomancy was based on land forms and structures that were oriented according to the magnetic North/South compass directions. In those days Feng Shui was used for the purpose of locating the best burial sites (Yin Feng Shui), as the Chinese people practiced ancestor worship. They believed providing the ancestors with the most auspicious burial sites would bless the descendants with good children, good luck, and good fortune. In time, the ancients realized that the same principles could be applied to benefit the living (Yang Feng Shui). The study of Feng Shui and Chinese metaphysics evolved to what we have today, along with the teachings of Lao Tze – the Yijing (I Ching), Confucius and Buddhist philosophy...... While the intricate details of what we consume and the activities we engage in are of obvious significance, the need for supplementation is often overlooked. Health food stores are filled with hundreds of products with almost countless applications. While there are condition-specific supplements required for some people, these top 5 foundation supplements will cover the bases for most. They address the significant nutritional concerns of a contemporary lifestyle including pH level, bone density, hormonal balance, free radical defense, cardiovascular protection, immune function, and cholesterol levels.
Multivitamin and mineral - Choose a formula that considers age, gender and level of activity and avoid the old-fashioned “one size fits all” formulas, the high potency one-a-day tablet, and the time-released versions. Choose a multi in a vegetable based capsule, designed to be taken more frequently to ensure optimal absorption and nourishment.
Calcium Men, women, and post menopausal women all have very different calcium needs, so choose a product that considers both age and gender........ [ read full article ]

Emotional Rescue
by Alexis Costello
What is Rescue Remedy? Many people have heard of Bach Flower Essences before without knowing it, in the form of the combination ‘Rescue Remedy’. Rescue is a blend of five Flower Essences concocted by Dr Bach before he passed away, to help people with various stresses and mild emergency situations.  Oprah has praised Rescue Remedy, in O magazine.  I have witnessed its amazing calming effects on everything from toddler temper tantrums, to bad cuts and burns, to anxiety before public speaking.

Does Your Pet Need the Needle? by Dr. Moira Drosdovech, Pawsitive Veterinary Care "Almost without exception there is no immunologic requirement for annual revaccination. Immunity to viruses persists for years or for the life on the animal. The practice of annual (pet) vaccinations lacks scientific validity or verification. The practice of annual vaccination in our opinion should be considered of questionable efficacy unless it is used as a mechanism to provide an annual physical examination."-- Professors Tom Phillips and Ron Schultz, "Canine and Feline Vaccines," Kirk's Current Veterinarian Therapy XI. What else needs to be said about vaccinations in pets? The above statement sums it up in an unambiguous manner and has been quoted very often in the last 8-10 years since it was printed. Many veterinarians in the last decade have begun questioning whether over-vaccination, while not yet validated scientifically, may be causing a good deal of unnecessary chronic illness in our pets. What is a pet guardian to do? My position is that....[ Read More ]

What is Heartburn / Acid Reflux? - Brenda Watson, Naturopathic Doctor, colon hydrotherapy, & founder of the Renew Life School of Natural Therapies

Brenda Watson Heartburn is a burning discomfort that is felt in the chest just behind the breastbone. The burning sensation results when harsh stomach juices come in contact with and irritate the delicate lining of the esophagus. Almost 30% of Canadians have upper gastrointestinal problems. Of that 30%, roughly 43% were heartburn. Many different things can cause heartburn to occur. Too much stomach acid (hyperacidity) Overeating Processed foods Carbonated beverages Restrictive clothing Not Enough Stomach Acid A large portion of people with heartburn actually have too little stomach acid being produced. When there is a lack of stomach acid, the stomach is no longer a sterile environment..... [ To read more - Click Here!]

By Yvette Eastman - Director of Touchpoint Institute of Reflexology and Kinesthetics

Animals are excellent candidates for Reflexology. They benefit from Reflexology as much as people do and perhaps even more than petting! They walk and live in the same stressful settings as we do, breathe the same air, drink the same water and lead noisy, angry, deprived lives.
For the love of humans, they have given up much of their freedom, and most of their instincts. It is time for us to give them something very special. When you first work on an animal, you need to relax them with and

Salba - the Gluten-Free Ancient Grain - By Maria Carr, Penticton

Salba is a variety of ancient plant species belonging to the mint family called Chia. Its botanical name is Salvia hispanica L. and it has been used in the diets of humans for hundreds of years. The remarkably advanced Aztec nation cultivated Salvia hispanica L. which they called Chia, as one of their nutritional foundations. The brilliant Aztecs used Chia to sustain them on long and arduous hunting and trading expeditions and in battle. They referred to Chia as “Running Food” because it provided extraordinary energy and power. Chia was to the Aztecs what Ginseng is to the Orient: the nutritional secret for restoring vigor and prolonging life..... [ Read More]

Calcium Confusion Unveiled by Bobbi Krien - Herbalist, sports nutrition specialist, and Manager of Penticton's Natures Fare Natural Foods.
With the amount of Calcium that North Americans are consuming, you would think that we would have a much lower rate of Osteoporosis, but in fact North Americans have one of the highest rates of Osteoporosis in the world! One of the main reasons for this is, the type of calcium supplements we are  ingesting; some types are  not very absorbable in the body and most is either excreted as waste, or it is depositing in various areas other than the bone in the body. Another reason is,.....[Read More]

Brad KingThe Stress Factor By Brad J. King, M.S., M.F.S. Most people these days will tell you that they are stressed! Chronic stress has been linked to North America's five leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung disease, accidents and cirrhosis of the liver, but I have seen much evidence that also implicates stress in the number one cause of disease (and death) these days--obesity. During a stress response -- whether actual or perceived -- your adrenal glands pump out numerous stress-hormones, the most powerful of which is cortisol. Many diseases and cases of obesity have been blamed on excess cortisol production. Cortisol is ....[Read More]

How Much Vitamin D?
W
hat is vitamin D?

Vitamin D, often referred to as the "sunshine vitamin," is actually a fat-soluble hormone that the body can synthesize naturally. There are several forms, including two that are important to humans: D2 and D3. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is synthesized by plants, and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is synthesized by humans when skin is exposed to ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays from sunlight. The active form of the vitamin is calcitriol, synthesized from either D2 or D3 in the kidneys. Vitamin D helps to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus.
Why is vitamin D necessary? Vitamin D assists in the absorption of calcium and promotes bone mineralization, which may prevent or slow the progression of osteoporosis. It also helps to strengthen the immune system and protect against a number of serious diseases, including rickets and osteomalacia... [Read More]

Whey proteinThe Power of Whey! by Matt Bomba, Vernon
The importance of protein for optimal health can not be overstated. Protein is required in the growth, maintenance, and development of all body tissues including muscles, blood, skin, hair, nails, and internal organs (the heart and the brain). We use protein daily for building, repair, and energy. Therefore we must consume adequate amounts or protein to keep our body supplied with this critical nutrient. If we eat too little protein, we lose muscle strength, weaken our body’s ability to fight disease and, most importantly decrease our lifespan. In short, whey protein is essential for life. SPRING CLEANSING & DETOXIFYING
The spring time is the perfect time for cleansing and detoxifying your body to get in back into shape. Detoxifying medicine is an ancient concept that appears as part of many healthcare systems around the world.
As a treatment detoxifying and cleansing your system is more important today than ever before because, in addition to the health problems humans been experiencing for  thousands of years, we are now exposed to a huge variety of environmental poisons. Disease from toxicity is caused by the presence of bio-chemicals that poison the blood and spread via the circulation system. As a result, cells and tissues are literally “swimming” in a contaminated environment. Detoxification is a treatment regimen that cleans the blood and removes toxins from the body. One of the body’s natural means staying healthy is its ability to detoxify itself. The organs of detoxification are the liver, kidneys, bowels, lungs and skin. Avoiding harmful substances such as junk food, pop drinks, drugs, tobacco, as well as supporting the organs in their detoxifying action is vital in maintaining and restoring health. Sufficient fluid intake supports the eliminating function of the kidneys, the bowels and the skin...
