Energy Overload

Many times, people come to me to help them ease their physical pain. I choose to work in Integrative therapies, because I feel there is value to each, and the combination that works for each specific situation will vary. I am writing this article from the singular viewpoint of Therapeutic Touch in regards to energy work.

 Therapeutic Touch is an intentional, compassionate direction of energy to create balance in the flow throughout someone’s energetic field.  Whether the symptom someone is wishing for ease from is a sore throat, a headache, muscle spasms, or post-surgery care, it’s important as a practitioner to be aware of the signs of energy overload, and to be vigilant for indicators of it.  It could even occur in the practitioner, if he or she is not sufficiently grounded and allowing the throughput of energy in their own body.

Rest assured there are ways to help clear the excess energy. Should any discomfort occur when someone is providing you a session, always let your practitioner know so he or she can make the necessary adjustments.

You may even notice the signs of energy overload in your everyday life. Do you find yourself experiencing any of the following in a busy place, such as a shopping mall or theatre?

  • Dizziness
  • Tunnel Vision
  • Shallow breathing, or hyperventilation
  • Flushed cheeks
  • Headaches

Overload may also show up as a temporary increase in pain, itchiness, burning, or any other sensation you already had before entering that environment.

It is caused when too much energy is concentrated in a specific location, or when we are not releasing as much energy as we are taking on.   The solution is therefore to guide the excess energy to flow away from the area of concern, and to ultimately balance the energetic flow within and through your entire body.

A practitioner would clear energy away, sometimes starting with clearing the area beneath it to make a path for the excess to go to.  If you are by yourself when you feel signs of energy overload, I suggest creating a visualization whereby you can modulate the flow of your own energy.

One of my favourites is what I call the “Tree Visualization”.  Imagine that you are a tree, with your head and arms as the branches, and your torso and legs as the trunk. Your feet are the base of the trunk, where the earth meets the tree. Feel your feet planted firmly on the earth. Envision a gentle breeze blowing to create movement.  Imagine yourself engulfed in sun rays, shining on every part of you, as if in a spotlight. Make the temperature exactly perfect for you.  Not too hot, not too cool – exactly perfect. Now grow roots down from your feet – deep, deep down into Mother Earth, and out as wide as you desire. Feel yourself deeply rooted, and release energy through your roots down, down, into the earth. She gladly receives this energy – all of it.  You will never have too much to release. Visualize that the suns rays are filling you with new, positive, and ongoing energy that will always be available. Welcome it, and feel it entering through your head, filling front and back right to the center, from every direction. Let it fill your entire body, starting at the head, and moving down through your neck, shoulders, arms, and out your fingers, while simultaneously feeling it in your chest, ribcage, midsection, hips, thighs, knees, calves and shins, ankles, to the tops and also bottoms of your feet, where it is released once again to the earth.  Repeat this as many times as you wish, knowing that there is no lack of reviving energy, and concentrating on releasing through your feet and fingers until you feel more balanced throughout your body.

Five minute de-stressors
People often say they are "stressed" when their normal coping mechanisms have been overwhelmed. If you need to decrease stress and improve coping, consider taking at least one 5 minute, de-stress break each day, preferably more. You can try different 5 minute activities throughout the week. These include stretching, daydreaming, deep breathing, reading a few pages of a novel, doodling, listening to your favorite song, or going for a quick walk. These mini "me" times provide a quick break and allow you a chance to regain emotional and mental control in difficult situations.
