Windows are Deadly for Birds. - February 2017

By Lindsay Coulter

More birds die each year from crashing into homes and buildings than are killed by wind turbines and vehicles combined. In Canada it's the third leading cause of wild bird death, after cats (domestic and feral) and power lines, collisions and electrocutions. Window strikes kill about 100 million birds in North America each year.

Birds can't see glass. And they fly so fast, any collision is usually fatal.

Here are some simple, affordable changes you can make at home or work to prevent these deaths:

Close blinds and curtains

Move indoor plants away from windows

Hang old CDs, aluminum pie plates or chimes to break up the expanse of exposed glass

Plant a shade tree to cut down on reflection

Dim or turn off lights, especially during spring and fall migration

Install special screens to cushion impact

Check out the Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) homeowner brochure  to learn what to do if a bird strikes your window and how to report it.

Do you feed birds in winter?

Your bird feeder can be an important source of calories for wild birds. Just don't place it right in front of windows! Be sure any feeders and bird baths are at least half a metre away from glass surfaces.

What steps have you taken to prevent bird window collisions at home or work?

Sincerely,

Lindsay Coulter, a fellow Queen of Green

Wellness Tip
Potassium
Potassium is essential for many reasons. These include blood pressure regulation and normal heart function. However, too much as well as too little can cause problems. Thus the National Institutes of Health recommend getting potassium from food, avoiding supplements except at your doctor's direction. Good food-based sources include bananas, yogurt, spinach, lentils, raisins, and acorn squash.

Recipe
Gluten-Free: Amaranth, Quinoa and Dark Chocolate Cake
Category: Gluten-Free
Description: Amaranth: This Central American ancient food has been cultivated for 8000 years, and is comparable to rice. Considered a grain, it is actually a seed. Amaranth is especially high in lysine, an essential amino acid most grains lack. Plus it is gluten free!
Amaranth is a pseudocereal that has been consumed as a grain since ancient times; the tiny buff-colored amaranth spheres were important in both Aztec cuisine and culture. Amaranth grains are rich in high-quality protein and minerals, and are naturally gluten-free.
The health benefits of Amaranth are that it is rich in Iron, Manganese, Magnesium, Potassium, and Phosphorus. It can be used ground as flour, cooked as a cereal, sprinkled on foods or even used as a thickener for soups. To cook, combine 1 part raw seeds to 2 1/2 parts liquid. Simmer 18-20 minutes, until soft. Amaranth may be toasted like pop corn and mixed with honey to make a treat called " alegria" which means "joy" in Spanish.
