OK In Health e-Magazine is an Integrative wellness lifestyle magazine covering a broad spectrum of topics including complimentary therapies and events, retreats, festivals and the arts, relationships - both with self and others - environmental issues and options to live in a way that is less harmful to ourselves and the environment.

In 2004, we decided to create a green magazine that is not printed. We are now the longest running e-Magazine and the premium place to find courses and events in the Okanagan and within BC.

In April, OK In Health enjoyed participating in the Earth Hour day celebrations at the new Shatford Center in Penticton, Seedy Saturday Penticton Market on April 9th,  Green Business Expo in Summerland on April 16th, Health and Wellness Fair at the Penticton’s Hamlets and at the Earth Day celebrations at Whole Foods Market on April 20th.

This month we have so many events posted by our members on our calendar. Also OK In Health is proud to present:   Connect to Your Own Power Workshop - with Cindy Smith. So have a look at our new e-Magazine and all the wonderful articles and events that your community is offering ~ Community supporting Community!

Sit back, relax and take a moment to see what they have to say…….

Warm Regards

Yours In Health

Breakfast Burrito

Description:
A healthy breakfast burrito is a wonderful and easy way for busy diabetics and busy families to obtain the nutrition they need. The perfect weekend treat or wrap in a paper towel and take with you on the road. You could top each burrito evenly with salsa and sour cream or simply garnish with cilantro sprigs. This is a meat-less, egg and veggie burrito. These diabetic breakfast burritos are good enough to become a Sunday tradition.

Tabouleh Salad

Description:
Quinoa (pronounced Keen-wah) is an ancient food that is not yet well known in North America. It has been cultivated in South American Andes since at least 3,000 B.C. and has been a staple food of millions of native inhabitants. The ancient Incas called quinoa the "mother grain" and revered it as sacred. Each year at planting time it was traditional for the Inca leader to plant the first quinoa seed using a solid gold shovel! Quinoa was used to sustain Incan armies, which frequently marched for many days eating a mixture of quinoa and fat, known as "war balls."

Blueberry-Pear Country Cobbler

Description:
Fruit is an important part of a healthy diet because it’s filled with vitamins and antioxidants, high in fibre, low in fat and calories, and delicious to boot. Here’s a recipe for a blueberry dessert that will bring some fresh fruit into your meal.

Weight Loss Question:
Can I drink as much diet soda as I want? Or is the 0 calories on the can misleading?

Weight Loss Answer:

In terms of calories, it is true that diet sodas do not contain any. However, the major issue with diet sodas is not the calories but the artificial sweeteners used in these products. Nearly 10 years ago, studies revealed that artificial sweeteners can:

• Stimulate your appetite (spike insulin levels which will increase hunger very shortly after eating).
• Increase carbohydrate cravings (consuming sweeteners will cause your sweet tooth to actually get worse).
• Stimulate fat storage and weight gain (increase in insulin levels cause you to get hungry and eat more).

Artificial sweeteners like aspartame (NutraSweet®) and sucralose (Splenda®) can contribute to many additional side effects. Sucralose, the sweetening agent in Splenda®, is actually made from sugar (sucrose). The advertising campaigns for Splenda® never cover how chemists then add three chlorine molecules to these sugar molecules to create the final product.

In many animal studies, its been revealed that sucralose may cause:
• Shrunken thymus glands (up to 40 percent shrinkage)
• Enlarged liver and kidneys
• Atrophy of lymph follicles in the spleen and thymus
• Reduced growth rate
• Decreased red blood cell count
• Diarrhea

The results of multiple studies have shown complaints and testimonials that aspartame may trigger or worsen the following diseases:
• Brain tumors
• Multiple sclerosis
• Epilepsy
• Chronic fatigue syndrome
• Parkinson's disease
• Alzheimer's disease
• Mental retardation
• Lymphoma
• Birth defects
• Fibromyalgia
• Diabetes

The bottom line is to research the use of aspartame and artificial sweeteners on your own and decide for yourself if you want to continue consuming these products. I would highly recommend switching from these diet sodas to good clean drinking water. Water is your best choice to hydrate your body and also help in weight loss.

The Third Principle: NOW (pg 89) - I had to double checked my calendar just to be sure, "Seriously? How could that be? It can't possibly be the last week of April already? Where does the time go?" then it hits me; as I scan the past few weeks in my mind, and sneak a peak into the weeks ahead, I realize that I'm doing all that thinking, wondering, and yes worrying...now.

Dyer challenges us to discover that our excuses don't apply when we truly master the art of being present. I dare say that's true, I don't wish to spend a single moment of my now mired in the excuses of what I could have, would have, or should have done differently! The only question is truly, "What can I do now and am I doing it?" There is a lot of freedom in that question. A tool to support us in being more present to the now, is to remove judgment of our current experience, or in other words "allowing" instead of "resisting".

I used to think that "allowing" as I had come to understand it, was a cop-out. If I couldn't find an element of my life to resist than I was just being complacent, and that would be worse than anything! I soon came to realize that the experience of accepting and allowing is not something that can be seen from the outside, it is a feeling of peace from within that emanates from us when we truly get it! True allowing is anything but complacent, it's co-creative, it changes our perception of what's happening, and it takes a whole lot less energy, freeing us up to spend that energy on what we truly want to experience.

I challenge us all to be here now...and now... and now, and to know that the gift of our right now experience is there if we are open to seeing it.

~Lyndsay

SOULAR RHYTHMS FOR THE WEEK OF:May 13, 2011

Tip of the Week:

The world is changing quickly now. Yet we remain is the cleaning and clearing stages of this global renovation process. Mother Nature is lending more of a hand than usual. Unfortunately, when she participates the results are often very messy and there are usually casualties as well. The broad strokes of her broom sweeps and heaves of adjustment are a reminder of how powerful she truly is. Yet, we too with our many inventions and technologies to both cope with the powers of nature and to perpetuate a better life contribute to the need for better solutions. As much as the cravings for more technology grow to match our escalating demands, the more we are pressured to comply. This is the catch 22. We want technology to make us free yet it has the effect of enslaving us to maintain it. While there are many good solutions, human nature is such that private ambitions have a way of perpetuating problems due to the profitabili...
