Publisher's Message ~ April 2012 Issue

A big 'Thank You' to all our members supporting this community wellness network, and for taking the time to read what our members have to share with you in our monthly eMagazine and on the website. This network could not happen without YOU!

Did you guess where I went to in March?
I spent St. Patrick's Day in Ireland!

Lord Mayor of Dublin Andrew Montague with Maria & Liam

[ Photo: Maria & Liam with the Lord Mayor of Dublin
Andrew Montague at the Dublin St. Patrick's Day Parade.]

I brought my son home to Dublin for his first time to meet all my family. We had a wonderful time and it opened a whole new world up for Liam. It was the most amazing trip ever.

We got to visit Frankfurt on the way to Dublin, plus 2 days in London with my sister at the opening of a major art exhibition which included a large number of her paintings.  Saw the London's Westend musical 'Wicked' which was brilliant. We also took in visits to Killarney in the South and Galway in the West of Ireland, affording us a chance to spend lots of time visiting friends and family. Best of all my uncle got tickets to the Dublin's big St. Patrick's Day Parade and my other Uncle took my son to the Lenister Gaelic football match. Every day was just amazing.

On my return home to Penticton, my next adventure includes attending the Angel Empowerment Practitioner™  Certification Course, and visiting the Spring Festival of Awareness in April and the Meadowlark Nature Festival in May. I am also busy coordinating the upcoming RAC Reflexology Teacher Course (May), Reflexology Practitioner's Course (May) and the Indian Head Massage - Certification course in June.
I love learning new things and seeing new places.

What adventures have you planned for YOU?

Check out our eMagazine for a great range of local practitioners, retreats, spiritual tours, courses and even free events to inspire YOU!.

Would you like to spend next St. Patrick’s day in Ireland?

We are arranging a 12 day tour to Ireland in March 2013, hosted by Maria Carr’s Celtic Healing Tours and facilitated by with Cindy Smith’s Angel Empowerment Practitioners course. It will be a trip of a lifetime. For more details, email Maria.

Nori Rolls

Nori has been valued as a food of longevity by Japanese people for a long time. According to the earliest written records in 701 AD, nori was so valuable as to be one of the tributes in those days. The amount of nutrition contained in nori is the highest among seaweeds, and nori contains as much protein as soybeans. Nori also contains vitamins and minerals such as iron and calcium as well as EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and fiber, which are necessary for maintaining good health. Nori is full of three desirable taste components: glutamate acid, inosinic acid, and guanil acid--also called "the flavor of Japan." This is the secret of its popularity among Japanese people since ancient times. Nori contains 12 kinds of vitamins including group A and B vitamins. Nori is called "The Reservoir of Vitamins" because few other foods are as much in vitamins as nori. Nori is part of a "beauty diet"--rich in protein and low in cholesterol. It is also part of a "healthy diet"--abundant in vitamins and minerals. It is especially good for growing children, with excellent medical value because it contains a substance that lowers cholesterol, helping to prevent arteriosclerosis. At the Japan Cancer Congress in 1958, professor Ichiro Yamamoto from Kitazato University announced that nori has cancer-preventing properties, and since then, nori's medical value has gained a significant amount of public attention.

Sugar Free Muffins

These are great if you need to have a sugar free diet. Add any kind of fruit you like. If you have a favourite muffin flavour, try that. It is a very flexible recipe. You can adjust this recipe to other flavour variations such as: Carrot Cake Apple Cinnamon Rhubarb Strawberry Rhubarb Fruit Muffins Submitted by Cathy Lauer

Veggie Pie with Cheese and root vegetables

Simple, yet tasty. Cheese and veggies go very well together — combine that with a crispy pie crust and I am in heaven. The best thing about this pie is all the possibilities. Root vegetables, grilled vegetables, fresh garden greens, filo pie crust, plain flour pie crust, dairy free puff pastry crust and more. Let your imagination run wild.

I have often wondered if there was a correlation between food and arthritic flare-ups?

Arthritic flare-ups can come and go unrelated to food choices. Many claims have been made about diet and arthritis but there is often not enough evidence to back them up. A balanced, healthy diet according to Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide is recommended and may help to reduce the overall symptoms of arthritis.

Foods high in omega 3 fatty acids may be beneficial due to their anti-inflammatory properties (particularly for rheumatoid arthritis). To increase the omega 3 fatty acids in your diet, use cooking and salad oils such as canola, olive and flax and eat cold water fish (for example: salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines) two to three times per week.

Weight is a key link between diet and arthritis. If you are overweight, losing weight through diet and exercise may decrease arthritic pain by reducing pressure on the weight-bearing joints.

Chapter 12: Boot Camp Perfect

As Rubin contemplates her motivation for her year of exploring how to become happier, she comes to the conclusion that to some degree it was about gaining control over many things in her life, in preparation for the time that would one day come where she didn't have any control - at all. We will all face that day ourselves, if we haven't already done so, to some degree.

From a personal perspective, the amount of change beyond my control over the past few months has been tremendous, but suprisingly, I am holding up much better than I expected, in large part due to shifts in attitude and perspective - choosing to focus on what brings me joy, or at the very least, reaching for a better thought in those most challenging times. It hasn't always been easy, but I have felt resourceful and resilient in the face of change.

As life goes on, Rubin continues to write about happiness in her monthly newsletter and falls back on her Commandments and Secrets of Adulthood when life throws curve balls and things don't go as expected.

After a year of exploring happiness, she realizes she is happier, and that she could change her life after all without really changing her life - I believe this statement to be true for all of us!

We can't change what has happened, however, when we change how we feel about what has happened by applying many of the strategies Rubin explores in the Happiness Project, things do change. As I wrote about in the previous post, when change is beyond our control, our ability to focus our attention on things we can control is what gives us our power back.

I don't know what lies ahead for any of us, but I do know that I intend to enjoy the ride down the invigorating river of life!

Be well, be happy, and please join us for the next soon-to-be-announced, book club pick!

~ Lyndsay

Review of 2011’s Spring Festival of Awareness

Wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded people. There are so workshops to attend that it is hard to choose because they are all great. Really enjoyed the opening and closing group ceremonies and treatments at the healing oasis. I go on my own each year and love meeting new friends. Treat yourselves to a fun weekend and recharge your energy and inner self. from Lucy, Vancouver
Are We There Yet? by Pamela Shelly
Some of the latest buzz this year is that we have arrived and are living in the 5th Dimension. Most of the planet is not even aware of the 5th Dimension and are experiencing their old world falling apart. Lots of anxiety and behaviors coming from a belief in lack and limitation. Many more are getting 'wake up calls' to shift them out of the illusion of the 3rd Dimensional energies...
Are You Taking Protein For Granted? by Elaine Munro
The word ‘protein’ comes from the Greek root, ‘proteios’, meaning ‘fundamental’ or ‘primary importance’. From the context of human health, it should be a fundamental part of any health improving strategy.
Cardiac Rehab and the Prevention of Hearth Disease- Part Three by Dr. Tamara Browne
This highly underrated area of health is equally as vital to our overall wellbeing as are diet and exercise. We now have ample evidence from scientific research, population studies, historical data, and life experience to conclusively prove that our feelings, emotions, sense of self, stress levels and reactions to stress all contribute to health. Our physical bodies are intimately connected to our minds and emotions. Perpetual feelings of....
Compassion and the Individual by Dalai Lama
I believe that the purpose of life is to be happy. From the moment of birth, every human being wants happiness and does not want suffering. Neither social conditioning nor education nor ideology affect this. From the very core of our being, we simply desire contentment. I don't know whether the universe, with its countless galaxies, stars and planets, has a deeper meaning or not, but at the very least, it is clear that we humans who live on this earth face the task of making a happy life for ourselves. Therefore, it is important to discover what will bring about the greatest degree of happiness.....
Creating Spiritual Sky Hooks! by Caroline Sutherland
We are all faced with challenges from time to time. This time happens to be our dark night of the soul. I like to think of “spiritual sky-hooks” or spiritual strategies that give us a leg up or inspiration when we seem to be spiraling out of control. We cannot control life, but we can control how we react to it. This is a time to keep your focus, keep your personal sense of integrity and balance as the process of life unfolds. Here are some of the elements that can help you at this time....
Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff by Carole Fawcett
“Remember, don’t sweat the small stuff” is what my friend told me at coffee the other day. We were talking about stress and how it affects people. She has a calendar that reminds her daily not to sweat the small stuff. One of the recent days read ‘Would you rather be right or happy?’ Of course we'd rather be happy. It’s what our consumer driven society tries to convince us that we’ll achieve if we’d only buy certain products. You know, I’m sure if a lot of people were asked how they would define happiness, there would be a lot of different answers.

How Can I Survive Without Sugar? by Cathy Lauer
Eating Gluten Free and Sugar Free - Most people assume that when they are told to cut sugar out of their diet that the only alternative is artificial sweeteners. Incorrect! There are a multitude of natural sweeteners that can be substituted in your cooking and baking. Yes, some may require you to change or modify the recipe but with a little help from knowledgeable resources or trial and error you can successfully change to a sugar free diet that is both satisfying and healthy....

Magnesium can Help Lower Stroke Risk by Miscellaneous
Research suggests that those who eat a lot of magnesium are significantly less likely to have a stroke. A review of seven major international studies claim that people who eat a lot of magnesium – dark, leafy greens, lentils, beans, nuts and whole grains, are less likely to have a stroke. However, many Canadians of all ages do not eat enough magnesium. In fact, more than 50 per cent of adults age 51 and older, eat too little and ...

Studying plants with naturopath and herbalist Ed Bernhardt by Alexis Costello
It’s a New Dawn – Studying herbs with the man who literally wrote the book. Ed makes a special concoction in his ‘lab’ of pau d’arco bark, ginger and tumeric powder. Tip of the Week:

Last week’s federal budget here in Canada was signed and enacted while both Mercury and Mars were retrograde. This indicates that it will be fraught with problems and will probably never settle well. That it was officially ratified after the New Moon in Aries cycle, which included Uranus in its scope, makes sense in terms of it activating a revolutionary movement. Many people are upset and virtually dumbfounded at the decisions of the leading players of our ‘elected representatives’ at both federal and provincial levels. Royal decrees would be better descriptions of the social policies being pushed through. Referring to people who get elected, or who assume positions of authority by default, as ‘our leaders’ may be part of the problem. Of course, behind the realities of national interests are all the forces of multi-national interests. Do you have solar lights outside, along a path or border? You can bring them into the house for the night, set each into a vase or drink bottle, and spread them out to give you free lights all night. They aren’t bright enough for reading, but are bright enough for you to get around. The next day, you just take your solar lights back outside and they will recharge and be ready for you to use the next night or any time the power is out. Submitted by Sally Scales
