Publisher's Message ~ August 2011 Issue

Greetings to all our OK In Health members,

First let us say a big 'Thank You' to all our members that support this community wellness network and for taking the time to read what our members have to share with you in our monthly eMagazine and on the website. This network could not happen without you!

I would like to take this opportunity, if I may, to send a special thank you to Hope Air, BC Residents Program, Variety's emergency response program, and all the doctors and nurses in Penticton, Kelowna Hospital and also at BC Children’s Hospital. Our three kids have been ill with different things and one child was seriously ill. She was hospitalized locally at first but then needed to go to Vancouver asap for surgery. Hope Air offered to fly her to BC Children’s Hospital and made all the arrangements for her. So many groups stepped in to help us make all the arrangement. We were very grateful for all the support from everyone and are pleased to say all our wonderful kids are on the mend now. You can help Hope Air get both children and adults to the care they need by donating airmiles online at www.hopeair.org or by contributing your RBC Reward Points at www.rbcrewards.com in exchange for a donation receipt. Another idea is to support the BC Variety club or the Shriners.

This month we have two brand new columns starting.
The Body Knows - with Best-selling author/I Can Do It/Hay House speaker Caroline Sutherland.
Pass on the Salt  - with lots of information on starting a low or salt-free diet.

We have many wonderful events posted on our calendar. So have a look at our new August eMagazine below and all the wonderful articles, recipes, and events that your community is offering ~ Community supporting Community!
Sit back, relax and take a moment to see what they have to say…….
Warm Regards
Yours In Health

Healthy Omlette

Description:
This is a simple omlette that is packed full of flavour! All eggs contain the same basic good stuff, and the large ones pack only 72 calories each, so you really can't go wrong. But depending on your eating habits, special eggs may be worth the extra cash. Labels to look for are Organic eggs as these were laid by chickens that aren't fed nasty slaughterhouse byproducts, antibiotics, or certain additives. Have you ever wondered what the difference is between free run and free range - check out the OK In Health article on that topic in our August Article section.

Vermicelli Pasta

Description:
This is a tasty pasta that will work well served with a protein source to become a complete meal. Vermicelli is a type of pasta that is round in section and somewhat thinner than spaghetti and a little larger than angel-hair. A lot of people use it instead of spaghetti. It cooks very fast because it's so skinny, 5 to 7 minutes or less. Try our Vermicelli Pasta Salad recipe for a flavourful salad that's perfect on a hot summer night.

Low Salt Pasta Dish

Description:
For a fast and easy dish try this pasta recipe. It's an excellent low salt and low potassium alternative to pasta with tomato sauce.

QUESTION:

We would like to start a low salt diet. What is the difference from Low sodium, No sodium and less sodium labels?

ANSWER:

Planning what you eat and balancing your meals are important ways to manage your health. Eating healthy often means making changes in your current eating habits. A registered dietitian can provide in-depth personalized nutrition education, tailor these general guidelines to meet your needs, and help you begin a personal action plan. Some evidence suggests a daily sodium restriction to 1500 milligrams (1.5 grams) may benefit patients with cardiovascular risks including heart failure, hypertension, kidney disease, African-American ethnicity, and all middle aged and older adults.

The best way to start is to read your labels. The sodium content is listed on the food label per serving size. Ignore the % daily value and focus on the amount of mg sodium per serving. Decrease the total amount of sodium you consume to 2,000 milligrams (mg) or 2 grams (g) per day or less.

Foods labeled Low sodium are 140 mg or less per serving.
No sodium have less than 5 mg per serving.
Less Sodium can still be very high. It just means they lowered the salt in the product from what the regular product has.

A good idea is to keep a record of the amount of sodium you consume every day. Write down the amount in mg after each meal or snack.

What is your favourite of Gretchen's Twelve Commandments or Secrets of Adulthood? (pp. 10-11)

My favourite today is #3: Act the Way I want to Feel - this works like magic, it's so freeing to know I have that much control over my mood...not new of course, it's a recycled version of "fake it 'til you make it", but just try it on for size one day this week, and see if it works for you too!

As for her Secrets of Adulthood, "no deposit - no return" couldn't be more true, so what is your deposit going to be today?

INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE Weekend Course with Susan Allen

The course is highly experiential with ample practical instruction, demonstrations and hands-on learning. It teaches the principles, techniques and movements of an extensive Indian Head Massage sequence that will give an introduction to the versatility and possibilities available to you with this modality.

By the end of the course I was able to give and receive a full massage treatment. A full Indian Head Massage treatment can take up to an hour and focuses on areas of the body that are most vulnerable to stress and tension: the upper back and shoulders, upper arms, neck, head, face and ears. The effects of Indian Head Massage are both immediate and cumulative. It provides a respite from our busy lifestyles and encourages us to feel more relaxed, balanced, revitalized and focused.
Indian Head Massage is ideal for augmenting and complementing many other modalities, professions and interests including but not limited to reflexology, acupressure, shiatsu, hairstyling, aesthetics, massage therapy, aromatherapy, reiki and body/energy work.
Susan Allen, was our instructor and she was awarded the Kent Centre of Indian Champissage (Head Massage) Diploma (UK) in 2002. Since then her practice has continued to evolve by combining a diverse range of experiences with ongoing personal development and bodywork studies. It has been a natural progression for Susan to share her enthusiasm in Indian Head Massage as a course instructor by drawing on her seven years experience of working as a Training Officer in England. She now teaches in Vancouver, across Canada and is coming the Penticton this fall.

"Taking it One Grain at a Time!" by 'PASS on the SALT'
By Maria O'Farrell-Carr. We thought we had a fairly good low sodium diet. In fact, when my daughter got stage three acute kidney disease, the renal specialists were in awe that she had not swollen up or didn’t have the classic signs of puffy eyes and ankles. We rarely use salt when cooking or on the table and this had helped her and her kidneys. Feeling pretty proud of ourselves, it was only until she went to the paediatric renal dietician and that we realized how much hidden sodium was actually in our foods.....

Are Mistakes REALLY for Learning? by Maggie Reigh
Do you feel compelled to correct and punish your child for making mistakes? For generations parents have believed this is how to teach right from wrong. But what are parents really teaching? Are they stifling their child’s natural impulse to learn and grow? Are they teaching their children to hide their mistakes and lie about them? Are they destroying their relationship with their child and their child’s confidence?...
Bladder Health ~ How to Get It and Maintain It by Caroline Sutherland
To pee or not to pee is the question on many post menopausal women’s minds. When we were younger, we could hold on for hours without emptying our bladders. Now it’s different. Cherry-picking in the Okanagan by David Suzuki
Tara and I love cherries. We thought it would be great to celebrate their season with an annual ritual. So for 32 years, we have looked forward to our annual cherry run, which begins as soon as school ends. We have loaded up the van and camped our way toward the Okanagan Valley where, depending on what kind of spring it was, we might start south in Osoyoos, or further north in Penticton or Kelowna.

Tip of the Week:

From the perspective of Earth, Mars, Uranus and Pluto are forming close angular relationships. Of greatest concern is the fact that Mars will form an exact Opposition (180 degrees) to Pluto and both planets will Square (90 degrees) Uranus. This “aspect pattern” is called a T-Square. Such angular relationships between planets have proven to produce ‘synchronistic effects’ here on Earth. This aspect pattern is a very powerful indicator of major events. Since Uranus is the ‘receiving’ planet from both Mars and Pluto and with Uranus positioned in Aries, there is an indication of sudden assertions, and violent shifts, be they geophysical, social/political or otherwise. The manifestation could also be positive, but it is the negative that usually ‘gets all the press’. How such energy patterns will manifest depends on the subjects that will be influenced according to their ‘nature’, like chemistry. Such a configuration is ‘destined’ because it is a...
