Portobello Mushroom, Goat Cheese and Walnut Sliders

Description:
This bite-size mushroom burger makes a tasty meat-free option at summer barbecues. Portobello mushrooms, sometimes also spelled portabella, are actually the same species as a crimini mushroom. Generally, the mushroom is called a crimini when small and a portabello when its cap has grown to about four to six inches in diameter. These large brown mushrooms have a meaty texture and can be grilled, roasted or used as an ingredient in other dishes. One cup of sliced portobello mushrooms, approximately 121 g, makes up a single serving and has only 42 calories. There is 1 g of fat and 5 g of protein in a cup of sliced portobello mushrooms. The total carbohydrate content of a serving of portobello mushrooms is 6 g, of which 3 g is fiber. Water makes up 108 g of the total weight of a 1-cup serving. There are only 12 mg of sodium in a cup of portobello mushrooms, so it is considered a low-sodium food. A 1-cup serving of portobello mushrooms supplies 31 percent of the daily recommended intake of selenium, or 21.4 mcg. It also contains 30 percent of the recommendation for copper and 18 percent of the requirement for both phosphorus and potassium. Other minerals in portabello mushrooms include iron, magnesium, manganese, calcium and zinc. In a serving of portobello mushrooms, there is 7.2 mg of the vitamin niacin, or 36 percent of the daily recommended intake, and 0.6 mg of riboflavin, or 34 percent of the recommendation for that vitamin. Portabello mushrooms also contain the vitamins pantothenic acid, folate, choline, vitamin B6 and thiamin, also known as vitamin B1. The nutrient betaine is also found in portabello mushrooms. Mushrooms also contain compounds called purines, which may cause health problems in individuals with gout. People with this condition may want to avoid eating portobello mushrooms. More antioxidant activity is found in the caps of mushrooms than in the stems. Unlike many other foods, most of the antioxidant level in mushrooms is not destroyed by cooking.

Cherry Smoothie

Description:
Cherries can be sweet or sour, red or black. My favorite varieties are the big black ones. We used to enjoy “Bing” cherries I commonly now see a variety called “Lapins”. Cherries contain anthocyanins, the red pigment in berries. Cherry anthocyanins have been shown to reduce pain and inflammation. Anthocyanins are also potent antioxidants. In addition, they appear to significantly lower blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. Cherries are considered a warm food and are great for increasing circulation. They make an excellent detoxifying food, helping the body eliminate uric acid and cleanse the kidneys. They contain ellagic acid, an anticancer compound. So, not only do they taste fabulous, they are also very healthy. A word of caution, cherries are considered to be part of the “”Dirty Dozen” when it comes to fruits and vegetables that have been found to contain the highest levels of pesticide residues. So, it is vitally important to choose only organically grown cherries. They may be considerably more expensive, but your health is worth every extra penny you spend. Fresh cherries are best stored in a bag in the fruit drawer of your refrigerator. They can also be pitted and frozen into serving sized portions.

Hello OK In Health eMagazine
I am a mum with two active kids and a part-time job. Recently I have been lagging in energy. I saw my doctor and she said all was fine but to try to get more rest. I did try coffee and those energy drinks but quickly realized they were not the answer. Does your team have any suggestions for me to try?
From Tracy, Kelowna, BC

Hello Tracy,
Have you considered going to see a naturopath? They have tests that can tell you how your whole body is doing and also look at the foods you are eating. You could also go to a practitioner that offers a biofeedback machine too. A nutritionist can look at your diet in detail. A fitness coach might help you with finding an exercise routine that will give you more energy. Finding the time with a family can be hard but you will find you will have more energy. Are you sleeping okay or getting enough sleep? If not, talk to your natural health store vitamin staff about supplements such a melatonin and some other supplement that may support your adrenals. Green drinks are a great way to give you energy and help to keep your in PH balance. Meditation is a great stress reliever. As you can see there are a lot of roads to follow and things to try. I would recommend visiting one of your local naturopaths or professional health care providers in your area.

We invite you to join our on-line book club discussion as we explore three well-respected teachers' perspectives on "The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self".

If you are noticing that you have less energy than you would like; that you are annoyed by what is happening in the world around you and you would like it to change; you feel disconnected from others and yourself, or you are feeling like something is holding you back from living the life you were meant to live - there is a good chance that the answer lies in your shadow.

These three luminaries, Chopra, Ford and Williamson - each with a signature approach, bring to light the parts of ourselves that we deny but that still direct our life and create obstacles to happiness.

Are you ready to shine some light on the dark place hidden in the shadow that holds the key to feeling peaceful and whole? It takes courage, but you are not alone. Together we will find our way through and explore the unexplored - the shadow self.

~ Lyndsay

“You’re sure getting a gut on you aren’t you?” by Sandra Butler
My best friend of 30 some years, aka my husband, turned to me and commented, “You’re sure getting a gut on you aren’t you?” Since this is quite out of character for this gentle, mild-mannered person who usually tells me how beautiful I am, I must say it threw me for a loop. Like most women might, I immediately rushed to the full length mirror and studied my profile. Yes, there it was for the entire world to see. I haven’t had a weigh scale in my home for years so I have no idea how much I had gained, but I do know what was causing this subtle increase in girth... Paying attention to what we put in our bodies is a year round adventure. Take some time this summer to prepare for healthy snacking and eliminate later regrets....

Don’t Let Sleep Slip Away by David Dixon
Sleep is a determinant in health, especially in today’s stressful lifestyle. Many practitioners believe that all dis-eases stem from one type of stress or another. Physical stresses can be just as devastating as emotional and when the two are combined it is not surprising that people have difficulty in sleeping. The body is so agitated that it will not slow down and relax enough to allow sleep to arrive…or at least, remain for very long. Once we determine that stress is playing at least a part in our sleeplessness, we can decide which route to take to help alleviate it. Often, people come to me, asking for melatonin. While it can be very beneficial for some people, it is definitely not the substance of choice for others. I’ll explain....

Self-Love: A Dear, Deer Encounter by Kerry Palframan, RN
My Creator had never stopped loving me and gently and benevolently reminded me that it is imperative to my well-being to be gentle, kind and loving to myself. About 10 years ago when I was 40 years of age I was in a fit of self-rage, hating myself. I do not remember why I was so angry, but I do remember it was consuming me, again! I lived near a farmer’s field and went for a angry, stompy walk through his corn field. Well I have never felt so surprised, when a majestic....
Serrapeptase™: Insect-Derived Enzyme Fights Inflammation by Enerex
Our bodies have a love-hate relationship with inflammation. On the one hand, inflammation is a natural response, necessary to protect the body from invading organisms. On the other hand, inflammation can limit joint function, and destroy bone, cartilage and other articular structures. An elusive goal of scientists and physicians has been to find a side-effect-free substance to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with fibrocystic breast disease, rheumatoid arthritis, idiopathic edema, carpal tunnel syndrome and post-operative swelling. It appears that the search may be nearing an end, thanks to an enzyme Serrapeptase™ produced by the larval form of the silk moth.....
The Many Health Benefits of Resveratrol by Dr. Tamara Browne
Resveratrol is the active ingredient in red wine that provides health boosting and disease preventing powers. This is why red wine in moderation is a healthy addition to a healthy lifestyle. Resveratrol can be taken in a supplement form to greatly increase levels in the body without causing damage from excessive alcohol intake. The most active form is trans-resveratrol and an optimal dose is 250 mg per day. Resveratrol has the following health benefits...

What Do I Make For a Gluten-Free Lunch? by Cathy Lauer
Making adult-friendly gluten free lunches. Lunch for some is brought to work or school in a bag. For others it might be a business lunch at a restaurant or in a boardroom with a catered lunch that likely does not include anything gluten free. Others skip lunch altogether and grab a quick coffee and donut mid afternoon to tide them over until dinner. How do you make the transition to gluten free keeping in mind the varying lunch styles and everyday situations you may be faced with?
What is Intuitive Painting? by Annie Rousseau
And What Does It Have to Do with Health and Wellness? Painting from our intuition is a way to listen in. To hear from all the divergent parts of ourselves: our child, that wants to play, be curious and full of wonder; the deep mystery of our soul's life; our desires and longings we have censored from the light and replaced with responsibility and control; our beliefs that have formed early in life and still direct our actions but are no longer useful to us.
What is ORAC by Norm Danniels
It’s no secret that fruit, especially berries, contain many of nature’s most potent antioxidants and phytochemicals. Unfortunately, few people consume enough to adequately battle the environmental toxins, stress and excessive free radical exposure we face each day.
Your Natural Body Clock by Miscellaneous
Tick tock! The movement of the clock sets your body in motion daily. In fact our bodies were naturally designed to function with hours of the day. Living life by our divine design has however been thrown off a bit by the direction and misinterpretation of man. If we were to take a look at the inner most workings of the body in relationship to health we would see a very precise system that ensures the survival of the body. However, when we are off balance, we suffer ailments, stresses and fatigues that are the result of ignoring the dictates of the Natural Body Clock. The spleen kicks in at around 9am to 11am to start the...
