Chilled Thai Melon ~ Raw Soup

Description:
Following is an example of eating a chilled raw soup, which will actually create some substantial heat inside your body…made possible by the addition of hot chile sauces. Honeydew melons have similar nutritional benefits of summer and winter squash. Honeydew melons are low in calories and high in their water content. They provide an excellent source of vitamin C and are also a very good source of potassium, copper, and B vitamins (including thiamine, niacin, B6, and pantothenic acid). Due to their high water content and combination with potassium, honeydew melons are helpful in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. They also provide several key nutrients that are particularly beneficial for healthy skin.

Curried Quinoa Lentil Salad

Description:
This is a great lunch or dinner side dish, full of protein and vegetables. Lentils are loaded with fiber, folate, iron, protein, and other vitamins and minerals, lentils are a nutritional fountain of youth. Researchers who studied the elderly found that eating these earthy-tasting seeds (and other legumes) is the single most important dietary factor in longevity. When it comes to fiber, a mere half cup of lentils provides around a third of your daily requirements. Whether you purchase lentils prepackaged or in bulk, look for those that appear largely unbroken (bags with broken lentils appear "dusty") and when you get home, don't mix newly purchased lentils with older ones; the older they are, the longer they take to cook. Keep them stored in a cool, dry place, and they will stay fresh for several months.

Roast Turkey with Apple, Sausage, with Herb Stuffing

Description:
Traditional roast turkey is still the dish of choice for most holidays and evokes images of celebrations with family and friends. This is the season for enjoying turkey. Health Benefits of Turkey is that is a lean meat and is a very good source of protein. A four ounce serving provides 65% of the daily value for protein, along with 11% of the daily value for saturated fat, about half the amount of saturated fat found in red meat. The structure of the human body is built on protein. We use animal and plant sources of protein for our amino acids and rearrange the nitrogen to make the pattern of amino acids we require. Turkey is a very good source of selenium, B vitamin and niacin.

QUESTION:
Hello OK In Health eMagazine
I was wondering about some health tips for my pets during the holidays? I have a 5 year old cat and also a 18 month old dog who is inclined to get into everything. I also heard that dogs shouldn't eat chocolate and certain plants are dangerous. Do you have some healthy tips for our furry little friends during this busy family time.
From Dee, Calgary

ANSWER:
Hello Dee,
Thank you for this great question and especially at this time of year. Holiday hazards abound at Christmas time for pets and now is a good time to warn you of what to be careful of. You are the guardian of your pets and you are shouldered with the responsibility to protect them from harm, including harmful behaviour. The more obvious hazards include chocolate, tinsel and electrical cords, but there are others. Below is a summary of what to watch for, what to avoid and what to do if you suspect a problem.

Chapter 8: Contemplate the Heavens

Eternity

While I can certainly attest to the fact that it is only when I am faced with challenges, tragedy and unfortunate circumstances, that I tend to truly appreciate the daily joys, health and supports that I have grown accustomed to; I never seem to appreciate a healthy back until I've had a week of chiropractic visits and pain-filled days.

Contemplating the heavens and searching for meaning beyond our physical existence is tightly linked to our happiness, and helps us get through the unhappy times so that all is not lost when we find ourselves on the down-side of the roller-coaster ride.

In this chapter Rubin speaks of living fully and thankfully in the present while suggesting a few ways to be able to do that; reading memoirs, keeping a one-sentence journal to record the unmemorable yet lovely moments in the day, a happiness journal, or perhaps a gratitude journal, or imitating a spiritual master.

I have had the opportunity myself these past few weeks to contemplate the heavens when we got a call that someone close to us was in hospital. It appears he had a near death experience; when he came to, he told everyone of the beauty he had seen, and that he is at peace and ready when it is time for him to pass on. Hearing tell of the grace-filled stories he shared with those present were precious and comforting. The pearls of wisdom and peace he shared and that continue to be shared with others have been a timely gift for all of us.

On the heels of this, we received news of the sudden death of a family friend, and the night before his funeral, my daughter was in a collision on an icy patch of road, thankfully the damage was minor and she was unharmed, albeit shook up and upset. All of those incidents gave me pause to think about what happens beyond our physical experience on this earth. Not easy, but it is part of the journey we will all travel one day.

It appears to me there's a reason gratitude has been a theme for me of late, it has certainly helped me get through the past few weeks.

I am very grateful for the many unmemorable yet lovely moments; for life; and for feelings that let me know I'm alive; after all, if there weren't any ups and downs on the roller-coaster of life, it would be a flat-line, and we will all get there eventually, so for now, I will choose to experience the variety.

~ Lyndsay

Kerry Palframan RN talk was on talk/workshop was on: Dreams and Messages From Your Spirit and Higher Self
On Sat. Nov. 26th at Kelowna Library on Ellis St.

"I really enjoyed this workshop. It awakened in me the importance of my dream state and how I receive the same info in my waking hours! I just didn’t realize it before. And how those waking hour messages can provide direction and insight about my life. Now I keep some paper and pen by my bed and in my car, so I can write down the signs and messages I am receiving. I make requests from my guides and I get the answers!. And I am on the lookout for symbols in my dreams and waking life all the time now. Thank you so much. It was really an eye opening workshop and has changed my life!"

Occupy Movement Demands Fresh Thinking – for our Grandchildren by David Suzuki
Biology dictates our absolute need for clean air, clean water, clean soil, clean energy, and biodiversity for our survival and health. Those are laws of nature and we can’t change them. We have to live within their boundaries. Capitalism, free enterprise, the economy, corporations, currency, markets, and regional borders are not forces of nature. We invented them. If they don’t work, we can and must change them.

Who wants to buy a toxic, cancer-causing product? India is Canada's best customer, and we also ship tonnes of asbestos to countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Mexico, and Sri Lanka. Why? December 2, 2011

Tip of the Week:

The last month of the year is here! 2011 sure has been eventful and the momentum continues. Soon the much prophesied 2012 begins. That it encompasses the Year of the Water Dragon will be getting a lot of press soon. Yet we are still in Sagittarius time, the 9th Sign of the Zodiac symbolic of completions and graduations. Last week’s Solar Eclipse seed is waxing towards a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse on December 10th. So, the year is going out with more of a bang than a fizzle. With Mercury currently Retrograde, navigating its tricky turns is part of the plot. Uranus hovering at 0 Aries since November 12 where it will remain until January 8th is the biggest general factor we are all contending with right now. 0 Aries archetypally = the rising sun at dawn, 6 am and Spring Equinox. In simpler terms it indicates powerful new beginnings. The last time Uranus officially entered Aries was March 11th, 2011 – a fine example of Astrological synchronicity....

THEE ESSENCE OF SOUND

by EVELYN MULDERS
“The Essence of Sound is a welcome, comprehensive, and highly sophisticated guide to the body's energy systems. It teaches you how to use sound, herbs, crystals, gemstones, aromas, colours and affirmations to orchestrate the energies of your meridians, chakras and aura into a beautiful symphony. Beyond this, it integrates the body's complex energy systems into an encyclopedic guide we can all use and understand. I recommend it highly”  ~ Donna Eden , Author of Energy Medicine ~  Order your copies today!   Website  Ph: 250-766-2005
