Cherry Smoothie

Description:
Cherries can be sweet or sour, red or black. My favorite varieties are the big black ones. We used to enjoy “Bing” cherries I commonly now see a variety called “Lapins”. Cherries contain anthocyanins, the red pigment in berries. Cherry anthocyanins have been shown to reduce pain and inflammation. Anthocyanins are also potent antioxidants. In addition, they appear to significantly lower blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. Cherries are considered a warm food and are great for increasing circulation. They make an excellent detoxifying food, helping the body eliminate uric acid and cleanse the kidneys. They contain ellagic acid, an anticancer compound. So, not only do they taste fabulous, they are also very healthy. A word of caution, cherries are considered to be part of the “”Dirty Dozen” when it comes to fruits and vegetables that have been found to contain the highest levels of pesticide residues. So, it is vitally important to choose only organically grown cherries. They may be considerably more expensive, but your health is worth every extra penny you spend. Fresh cherries are best stored in a bag in the fruit drawer of your refrigerator. They can also be pitted and frozen into serving sized portions.


Baby Spinach, Tomatoes, Mixed beans with fresh balsamic herb dressing

Description:
Beans are a great idea for a supper side dish or for a quick lunch. This salad can be kept in the fridge for up to two days. Consuming beans adds significant amounts of fiber and soluble fiber to a diet, with one cup of cooked beans providing between nine to thirteen grams of fiber. Soluble fiber can help lower blood cholesterol. Beans are also high in protein, complex carbohydrates and iron. Balsamic has a rich tart taste, but the sweetness covers the tart flavor, making it very mellow. True balsamic vinegar is aged for between 3 and 12 years. Some balsamic vinegar is aged for up to 100 years, but they usually are very expensive. The Health Benefits of Balsamic is that it has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties which make it an effective remedy for treating infections and wounds. Balsamic vinegar contains powerful antioxidant called polyphenols which fight cell damage and boost our immune system. The antioxidant in balsamic have also the potential to protect against heart disease, cancer, and other inflammatory conditions. Balsamic can help boost the activity of the digestive enzyme pepsin thus improving metabolism.


Fresh Cherry Crisp

Description:
What says summer more than cherries? This is a delicious cherry crisp made with fresh cherries instead of canned. It may take a little longer to make because you need to pit the cherries, but it is well worth it when you taste the finished product. The nutritional benefits of cherries are pretty big, particularly when you consider their small size. Many of the health benefits of cherries are related to the natural chemical that gives them their color. Anthocyanins give flowers, berries and other fruits the colors ranging from red to blue. Some of the best food sources of anthocyanins are red grapes, chokeberry, eggplant and, of course, cherries. These pigments attract pollinators, act as a “sunscreen” and protect the plant from radicals formed by UV light, so they act as antioxidants. The antioxidant benefits are transferred to people when the fruits or vegetables are eaten. Anthocyanins are also natural pain relievers and anti-inflammatories. They inhibit the production of COX-2 enzymes, as do over the counter and prescription pain relievers. Natural anti-inflammatories are believed to reduce the risk of many types of cancer. But, there are more nutritional benefits of cherries. Cherries contain melatonin, another natural pain reliever and COX-2 inhibitor. Melatonin also helps to regulate sleep cycles and has been sold as a natural sleep aid. Reduced levels of melatonin have been associated with heart disease and increased cancer rates in night workers. The human body naturally produces melatonin, but primarily in darkness. Constant artificial lighting present in most homes and work places reduces the amount of melatonin that the body produces. So, one of the health benefits of cherries to modern day man has to do with replacing some of the melatonin that has been lost to artificial light, unhealthy work schedules and unnatural sleep patterns. And, there are more nutritional benefits of cherries. Cherries, like most fruits, contain vitamin C. The proven and suspected health benefits of cherries and other vitamin C rich foods are too numerous to be covered in this recipe.

Question:

Are certain body shapes healthier than others, and how does my waist size relate to my health?

Answer:

Certain body shapes can be healthier than others, but it's most important whether or not you're overweight or underweight. Now overweight is not particularly healthy at all, but if you're overweight where your body stores its weight becomes very, very important. If you store your body fat in the upper body, around the belly area, for example, you're considered to have an apple shape.

If you store your body fat primarily in the hips and thighs, you're considered to have a pear shape. And this is all genetically determined. You cannot change your inherent body shape.

But you can do a few things to become more aware of where your body stores its fat and that can influence what steps you take to control your weight.

It's important to understand that body fat around the waist is associated with more chronic health problems especially hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. So keeping track of your waist size no matter what your weight is, is a good thing.

It's important for men to keep their waist size below 40 inches. It's important for women to keep their waist size below 35 inches because below these limits you have a much lower risk of contracting the effects of heart disease, diabetes, and these other chronic health problems.

"Your Vital Child" By Mark and Angela Stengler, NDs

This book was a wonderful reference to any parent looking for natural alternatives to treat and keep children healthy and happy. It has many references to healthy food choices, and recommended daily allowances for children's nutritional needs. The great thing this book offers that it talks about supplementation, as well as herbal applications for many different aliments. In addition to the alphabetical listings of diseases and aliments, there are sections in the book that specifically address: emergencies, vaccinations, breastfeeding, homeopathy, massage and acupressure, to name a few. I particularly liked the short section called "Your Child's Natural Medicine Kit". throughout the book there are sidebars that feature "Vital Facts" or "Case Histories", I liked the short blurps of information and statistics these provided. There are also references for parents and caregivers to find out more information, including websites and phone numbers of any particular groups they are interested in, such as the different therapies available. All in all I believe my family will benefit from having this book lying around the house, ready to refer to at any time.

Tip of the Week:

The first New Moon of Summer occurs on July 8th at 12:14 am PDT, so it takes place on July 7th for most of the world. The eclipses in April and May and the ‘Super Moon’ of June sure have delivered in terms of synchronizing with powerful events. I am referring to the massive flooding the world over. These peak points in the cycles of nature are not easy to predict, but they are certain to occur and the endeavor to be able to predict where and when they will occur constitutes the roots of science and astrology. These powerful events have and continue to bring about the change and transformation that they were predicted to produce this year. Astrologers sent this warning out earlier this year. I made clear mention of it in my Horoscope for the Year 2013 which is posted on my website, along with forecasts for each sign covering 2013. Regarding the catastrophic impact of nature that have and continue to be visited upon humanity, finding the silver lining ...
