QUESTION: Can you tell me a way to figure out my basic metabolism?

ANSWER: Dear Reader, To figure out your basic metabolic rate, it must be measured under very strict conditions such as after a night’s sleep, on a fast, and without any physical activity, etc. What is more common and often more useful is a person’s resting metabolic rate (RMR). RMR is the number of calories you burn to maintain vital functions such as breathing, pumping blood, and maintaining your muscle and nervous system at resting conditions. This is measured under less strict conditions and often does not require the person to fast or to sleep right before the measurement. An accurate RMR measurement requires the use of an apparatus called indirect calorimetry. This can be expensive, so estimating RMR using parameters such as body weight, height, and age can be used as well.

There are three common equations to estimate RMR: (1) the Harris-Benedict equation, (2) the Mifflin equation, and (3) the Cunningham equation. These equations are population specific, so it is important to be aware of their limitations.

Harris-Benedict Equation (widely used and relatively accurate for average body type):

    Men: RMR (in calories per day) = 66.47 + 6.23 x Weight (lbs) + 12.67 x Height (in) - 6.76 x Age (yrs)

    Women: RMR (cal/day) = 655.1 + 4.34 x Weight (lbs) + 4.69 x Height (in) - 4.68 x Age (yrs)

    Mifflin Equation:

    Men: RMR (cal/day) = 10 x Weight (kg) + 6.25 x Height (cm) - 5 x Age (yrs) + 5

    Women: RMR (cal/day) = 10 x Weight (kg) + 6.25 x Height (cm) - 5 x Age (yrs) - 161

Cunningham Equation (uses fat-free mass, suggested for athletes):

    For men and women: RMR (cal/day) = 500 + 22 x FFM (kg)

If you would still like to know more about measuring your metabolic rate, such as through an indirect calorimetry, it is recommended to see a health care provider.

Eat to Live: The Amazing Nutrient-Rich Program for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss by Dr. Joel Fuhrman.

Hailed a "medical breakthrough", EAT TO LIVE offers a highly effective, scientifically proven way to lose weight quickly. The key to Dr. Joel Fuhrman's revolutionary six-week plan is simple: health = nutrients / calories. When the ratio of nutrients to calories in the food you eat is high, you lose weight. The more nutrient-dense food you eat, the less you crave fat, sweets, and high-caloric foods.

EAT TO LIVE has been revised to include inspiring success stories from people who have used the program to lose shockingly large amounts of weight and recover from life-threatening illnesses; Dr. Fuhrman's nutrient density index; up-to-date scientific research supporting the principles behind Dr. Fuhrman's plan; new recipes and meal ideas; and much more. This easy-to-follow, nutritionally sound diet can help anyone shed pounds quickly-and keep them off.

After reading Eat To Live all the way through, I was struck by the logic for the concept of the plan. The research outlined in the book is clear and abundant. One week on this plan, and I am loosing 1 lb. per day. I feel better. My clothes are looser. But, best of all, I can sleep at night! I had not been able to sleep more than an hour or 2 a night. Last night, I slept almost 5 hours before waking. A record, with no sleep aids!!!! The aches and pains I had experienced for over a year are almost gone! I do believe this plan is worth trying, for anyone concerned about their health. I certainly am glad I did. I have renewed hope.

    Debra

Registered Reflexology Therapist Certificate Course - Penticton, Okanagan

Are you interested in becoming a Certified REFLEXOLOGY Practitioner?
    RCRTs (Registered Canadian Reflexology Therapist)

The RAC Foot certification course has been offered across Canada for over 34 years now, and it is recognized everywhere. The course is designed with adult learners in mind. The course material is very well done, and students also get a second 'Home Study Manual' in order to help them retain what was learned in class. The methodology is thorough and effective. The benefits of Reflexology are absolutely amazing.

As you may know by now, Dawn Whittick is have an intensive Foot Reflexology course beginning June 23 in Penticton. Part of the course is dedicated to learning basic Anatomy and Physiology, including the systems of the body and their related organ and gland reflex points in the feet. Once the 'in-class' portion is over, you must then complete a written exam, and begin your case study sessions. A total of 60 foot reflexology sessions must be completed according to RAC standards, i.e., using a Health Questionnaire and the methodology taught in class...you must find 5 to 10 people in your entourage who are willing to receive a minimum of 3 sessions and up to 12 sessions each on a weekly or bi-weekly basis). These can be people from work, family members and neighbours but better to work with those who actually have physical conditions. You can contact me by phone or email any time during the prepartion of the case studies to review them and ask questions. Then finally, once you have completed your 60 sessions, you go for the practical exam with another RAC teacher. You have up to one year from the last day of class to get your case study sessions completed. Some of my students have done the entire process in five or six months. It all depends on the amount of time you have free to study and do you case studies.

RAC classes are generally small, so you get lots of personal coaching. In this case, we expect to have approximately 6-8 students for the course. You will team up with others to practice the foot routine. Its a great opportunity to begin to develop a reflexology community!
Please be advised that this is an 'Intensive' training.

If needed, Students accommodation rates are available - contact Maria

Please let Maria or Dawn know if you have any other questions about the course. Don't hesitate to contact us. See Penticton event page for more details
