Banana Chocolate chip muffins

This is abit of a twist on the tradional banana muffin. With the added protien from the quinoa and fibre from the oatmeal it makes a great healthy snack that will satisfy you between meals. This recipe also uses spelt. Spelt is a grain similar to wheat whose origin dates back to approximately 5000 B.C., from the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern region. Italians have been consuming it for a long time under the name of "farro," and Germans have been calling it "dinkle." Making a comeback in the U.S., spelt may be a nutritious alternative for those with wheat allergies. Spelt flour is rich in fiber. Due to its higher water solubility, spelt flour is more easily digested than wheat. Spelt has a higher protein content than those made of wheat.

Best Raw Chili Ever…

So, now for the “piece de resistance”… a delicious wintertime raw recipe guaranteed to keep your body furnace stoked. Note the liberal use of heating herbs! Kidney beans are a very good source of cholesterol-lowering fiber, as are most other beans. In addition to lowering cholesterol, kidney beans' high fiber content prevents blood sugar levels from rising too rapidly after a meal, making these beans an especially good choice for individuals with diabetes, insulin resistance or hypoglycemia. When combined with whole grains such as rice, kidney beans provide virtually fat-free high quality protein.

Spinach & Cilantro Pesto

One leafy, green vegetable that I cannot seem to get enough of is Spinach. Spinach is so versatile, from spinach salads, to spinach smoothies, to spinach soup. You name the recipe and spinach can be added to it. And talk about nutritious…remember Popeye?? The health benefits of spinach are numerous. It sits at the top of many super food lists. Spinach is loaded with calcium, folic acid, vitamin K and Iron. It is also rich in Vitamin C, fiber and caretenoids. Add its lutein and bioflavanoids and spinach becomes a nutritional powerhouse. The combination of flavours in the following recipe are simply divine. I’ve cheated a bit and toasted the cashews, but it’s worth it for the enhanced flavour.

I was wondering what age does the cancer screening start.
From Jamie A, Nelson

Hello Jamie,

The main purpose of cancer screening is to detect early disease before it is clinically evident/palpable. If you have any concerns please make an appointment with your doctor. Here are a few of the recommended testing.

Screening for Breast Cancer
There are numerous modalities that have been used for breast cancer screening,
such as mammography, MRI, thermographs, clinical breast exam (CBE) by a health profession and breast self exam (BSE)
Recommendations (Canada)
• Mammogram every 1-2 years from age 50-69
• clinical breast exam yearly from ages 50-69
• self-breast exam monthly

Pap - screening for Cervical Cancer
• First PAP is generally 3 years after the onset of sexual activity and no later than age 21.
• Screening should be annually for at least 3 consecutive normal smears , then every 3 years or at the discretion of the physician.
• High-risk patients should continue to have yearly smears.
• Screening until age 65 and 70 respectively.

Screening for Prostate Cancer
• PSA testing should be offered along with DRE annually to men 50 yrs of age and older.
• High risk patients should be screening beginning at age 45.

Colorectal cancer
• The Canadian Cancer Society recommends that average risk patients age 50.

For more informatiion please contact your doctor or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Thank you for your question.

Chapter 7: Buy Some Happiness

We have all heard it before; "Money can't buy happiness", however I am pleased to see Rubin address the ever elusive relationship between money and happiness in this chapter.

She likens the relationship to the one between "Health and Happiness" doesn't guarantee the other, but an absence of health or money, can certainly create a lot of stress and unhappiness.

I happen to live by the credo that it is not what we do, but how we do it that matters. I believe the application of this thought to the Money-Happiness relationship plays out not so much in spending our money, but more so, how we choose to spend the money we have. Does it stress us out, or do we treasure the experiences? Both approaches can create very different results.

She explores how even a modest pleasure can be a luxury if it is scarce enough, and how more of a good thing doesn't necessarily equal better. Sometimes a rare treat's appeal is that it is rare in the first place.

I would love to hear your thoughts on "Spending Out", using your good stuff, instead of saving it for a special occasion, an area are of interest to me as I consider what really brings me happiness. I love candles, and felt over-indulgent lighting more than a few...until I found myself saving them for company and forgetting to light them at all. Spending out is about allowing yourself to consider this moment a special enough occasion, and enjoying the things you have right now.

Will you look at the relationship between money and happiness differently after reading the Happiness Project?

Rubin certainly gives us a lot to consider, and that is what I love about this book, it is not "how to" be happy, it's a "have you considered this?" approach towards one's journey to a happier experience, and at the end of the day, she is is not a quick fix, and she admits, her happiness project was no magic charm. Just like money doesn't guarantee happiness, neither does pursuing a happiness project. Sometimes we just have one of those days...(or weeks!) and although as human beings we get to choose our attitude, sometimes we just don't want to do what works.

It's nice to know we have permission to be grumpy within our happiness project, and even nicer to know, it's all temporary!

~ Lyndsay

LEE HARRIS - The Magic and Power of You Review - Oct. 15
This was truly moving day for those I spoke to and very group specific—bang on actually. That relevancy alone made it worth every penny. I truly appreciate the empowerment in Lee’s message—how important it is for sensitive ones to know who they really are, especially when they pick up so easily on others. I love the way he volleyed between channeling and grounding with exercises; we are both spirit and human after all. To me, remembering who you really are is all there is. And with all the swirling in the world today, this message is vital to our balanced evolution. Lee is a true gift.

LYME DISEASE SEMINAR - Prevention and Treatment with Dr. Sherry Ure.
I attended this free seminar in October, held in the Wheatgrass Cafe' at the Penticton Whole Foods Market. As with other free seminars that I have attended there, it was well set up and executed. Dr. Ure is a clear, concise presenter. She emphasized the importance of prevention and early diagnosis. Rather than miraculous cures and magic bullets, she laid out treatment options that used the best of western medicince with the best of natural medicine to support our bodies in fighting this disease. She knows this topic well.

November 18, 2011

Tip of the Week:

Having now passed through the ‘11:11:11 Gateway’, and the Sun shifts from Scorpio to Sagittarius (Nov. 22) in the ‘Tropical Zodiac’, we are entering the last month and sign of the ‘natural year cycle’. Winter Solstice marks the natural ending and beginning of the ‘solar cycle’. Sagittarius is the 9th sign, and aptly, 9 is the number of completions, endings and graduations. Since Tropical Astrology is based on the Sun’s cycle which determines the seasonal cycle and does not defer to the retrograding ‘Precession of the Equinoxes’ and ‘Zodiacal Constellations’, a shift of perception is required to appreciate that the ‘signs’ are not so much in the celestial sphere as here on Earth.
